FM Seminar: Best Practices on Environmental Measures and Initiatives

Given the growing level of environmental awareness, more and more people understand that we need to sustainably manage our planet’s resources and ecosystems. MMA hosted a seminar on Facility Management with the theme of “Best Practices on Environmental Measures and Initiatives” on June 29 at MMA seminar room. To facilitate the public in choosing energy efficient appliances and raise public awareness on energy saving, specialists from Facility Management and Environmental Protection were invited to be the speakers. They suggested that Macau might adopt the measures taken in Hong Kong for promoting environmental industry.

Ir Szeto Ka-sing, Chartered Engineer, stated that we have to steer and co-ordinate efforts in achieving carbon reduction targets. The major source of carbon emissions in cities is thelighting, air-conditioning and elevators facilities from commercial and residentialbuildings. Take elevators as anexample, the excess energy cost and associated carbon emissions is potentially enormous. A variety of energy saving measures can cut elevators’ energy consumption significantlyandcould conserve a tremendous amount of energy.Environmental industry encompasses all goods and services associated with environmental protection, including design and operation of environmental infrastructure and products related to energy conservation and carbon reduction in the longer-term future.

To cope with this eco-friendly practice, Hong Kong Government introduced the voluntary subsidy scheme in 2012 to encourage thepublicof choosingenergy efficient appliancesand implemented the Mandatory Scheme of using environmental systems and eco-friendly products in 2015, in which the Macau Government may consider to undertake these initiatives to promote energy efficiency.
