Spirituality & Management

The charismatic Spiritual Guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who has made “Art of Living” a house hold name in India and worldwide addressed the management fraternity in Mumbai on June 30, 2006. The theme of his address was ‘Spirituality and Management”. In his address Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasized the following:

  • Finding the correct balance between life and work, between spirituality and management
  • Don’t be afraid of chaos. Bliss comes out of chaos, creativity comes out of chaos, a sense of belonging comes out of chaos. You grow out of chaos. It is not what you do that is important. It is what you are that is significant.
  • Spirituality makes you what you are. How do you want to be remembered when you go from here? If you work that out in your mind you will remain on the right track.
  • The first law of spirituality is to stop blaming yourself. If you do that your mind will be in touch with your spirituality.
  • You cannot flourish in an atmosphere of tension or of an absence of belonging. It is like driving with the brakes on. Spirituality is not running away to the Himalayas or from responsibility. It is remaining where you are and turning within.
  • Reflect on your life and see it from a broader perspective in the context of Cosmology. Seeing life in totality broadens your vision. You have to be holistic, not fragmented. Play all your roles perfectly

  • Everything can be bought except developing mindscape in quest of excellence.
  • If you want to be the best in the world, you must hear grievances before they are uttered and estimate the customers’ needs before they are expressed.
  • There has to be a vision which has to be crystallized and communicated constantly with the customers and the employees.
  • The CEO must come through as a winner for no one wants to back a losing team! The CEO has to lead the change and be a role model for what the company wants to achieve. The buck stops here.

HKMA-CFE gets accedited

HKMA College of Further Education (CFE) has passed the institutional accreditation and its Associate Degree Foundation Programme (ADFP) has passed the programme validation. The accreditation exercise was conducted by academic teams from the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation. The Association is now in a position to launch accredited post-secondary programmes. Active discussions are being held with overseas universities to provide a direct route for students to receive their bachelor's degree.

There were two phases in the accreditation process: Institutional Review (IR) and Programme Validation (PV). IR is the review of an education institution to assess its suitability and quality assurance process as well as the evaluation of its general academic environment. PV is the evaluation of a specific programme to assess its comparability with international standards and similar programmes in Hong Kong. The CFE successfully passed the IR in May 2005 and the PV in June 2005.

The first day-time post-secondary programme to be launched will be a one-year full-time Associate Degree Foundation Course catering for Secondary 5 graduates. Graduates of the course will go on to a three-year bachelor degree daytime programme offered locally by HKMA in conjunction with the Curtin University of Technology.
Credit Accord for Hong Kong is Planned

The Government of Hong Kong is planning to introduce a credit accumulation and transfer scheme to promote life-long learning and support articulation in secondary and post-secondary education and training.

The focus of the scheme is on sub-degree qualifications to improve articulation arrangements between qualifications and providers for the benefit of learners. It is envisaged that the scheme may progressively extend credit accumulation and transfer to other sectors of post-secondary education, when these sectors are willing and able to accommodate it.

The context of learning is becoming increasingly complex in its content, form and location. The trend is towards lifelong learning with closer links to the workplace, and the need to recognize work-related, informal and non-certified learning, and the requirements of e-learning is placing new demands on institutions. Increasingly institutions need a 'common language' to describe all the learning that they are responsible for. Credit, based on the volume and level of learning-demand provides a language that can unite all providers.

A credit and qualifications framework places learners at its centre, enabling them to gain credit for their learning whatever the level, the time taken, the volume or the location. By studying in smaller units and avoiding unnecessary repetition, learning can be planned effectively and motivation maintained. A credit framework provides the mechanism by which individuals can transfer between programmes in one institution and between institutions and have their relevant prior learning recognized.

The idea of a Credit Accord is now being pursued which commits its members to:

  • Promote the principles, objectives, outcomes and operational strategies of the Credit Accord.
  • Adhere to the terms of the Credit Accord should they seek to assign, award or use credit.
  • Recognize the award of credit of other bodies that are signatories of the Credit Accord.

The Accord thereby relies upon:

  • Institutions having appropriate credit recognition and transfer and appeal processes in place.
  • Learners having access to information and recourse to appeal.
  • Quality assurance bodies ensuring credit recognition and transfer and appeal requirements are met through the quality assurance processes they apply i.e. course validation, accreditation and ongoing audit, or equivalent procedures.
  • It is envisaged that more discussions are necessary for course operators in Hong Kong to arrive at an agreement regarding the common currency for credit transfer. According to HKMA the scope of the Credit Accord should also be expanded to include degree awarding programmes.

New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM)

2005 was an outstanding year for the New Zealand Institute of Management and 2006 is looking even better with new opportunities on offer for aspiring managers.

    New Governance impact

New governance at national board level has brought a greater shared vision to directors, management and staff throughout New Zealand, according to New Zealand Institute of Management National Chief Executive, David Chapman. Looking back on 2005 and ahead at plans for 2006, Chapman believes NZIM is working better at the national level and now produces a more comprehensive and co-ordinated range of services and programmes to its national customers.

NZIM began a review of all its resources and qualifications last year to ensure that "what we were delivering was up to speed and timely," says Chapman. "And this work will continue in 2006. We have made significant improvements in the tracking and reporting for all of our qualifications. We are very proud of our quality management system which ensures customers get the best possible service and, most importantly, quality learning outcomes."

    Specialized Programmes

NZIM developed and/or registered a number of new specialist management qualifications last year including Diplomas in Front Line Management, Project Management, Supply Chain Management and Health and Safety Management. "We have now developed a reputation for providing high quality specialist professional management qualifications and new ones are planned for 2006," says Chapman.

"We promised at the beginning of last year that we would focus on our central strategic objective of building outstanding managers and leaders and there is no doubt that we made tremendous progress last year. We will continue to build on this programme of new initiatives and activities in 2006."

    Key Focus Area for NZIM

NZIM is a significant contributor to the Business and Management Capability partnership initiative managed by the Ministry of Economic Development. NZIM's key areas of interest include work into what can be achieved through both formal and informal learning, action research, the impact of coaching and mentoring and input into research projects which help define how to achieve better organisational performance through improved management and business capability. Other initiatives include identifying international best practice management benchmarks and how best to adopt them in New Zealand.

    60 Years of Service

NZIM will celebrate 60 years of management development and service in 2006. As part of this celebration it is planning to stage a number of high profile events, including a Management Week of activities and a major management conference. "The concept of a management week will provide an opportunity for organisations and managers to think about the key issues and challenges which lie ahead for managers and leaders and come up with some new ideas and pragmatic solutions to some rapidly evolving and long term organisational and economic performance problems," says Chapman.

NZIM is working to establish a knowledge and information centre for management excellence in 2006. This will include processes to recognise experience, expertise and excellence in terms of both (learning) qualifications and credits, the recognition of competence, recognition of prior learning and professional conversation.

One of the priorities is the development of self-assessment tools for managers which will link to NZIM qualifications, NZIM development programmes and career development and business information services .

NZIM's national mentoring programme is the only accredited programme of its kind for managers in New Zealand which will continue to grow. NZIM signalled its intention to be a leading voice in business learning and performance development with its pre-election published briefing paper for the incoming government.

NZIM also expects a greater intake to its popular Certificate in Management programme in senior secondary schools in 2006. NZIM is working with several polytechnics on new ways of delivering its certificate programmes, including the development of new marketing strategies. Many polytechnics are also interested in the new diploma qualifications, the Diploma in Management, the Diploma in Management (Advanced) and the Professional Managers Award.

There has been a dramatic increase in the registration of language schools and other private training establishments (PTEs) many of whom are interested to deliver NZIM's Diploma in Management and Certificate in Management. The NZIM Diploma in Management will become a one year programme in 2006 and so offer a staging point for students who would like to exit study for career reasons or go on and complete a degree.

NZIM will offer a new Certificate in Language, Culture and Management in July 2006.

With thier new programmes approved and overseas contacts consolidated with the establishment of NZIM Asia Pacific, NZIM plans to promote these courses in Malaysia and other Asian countries, including China.

As part of a completely different initiative, NZIM is also engaged in discussions with various parties to manage the Business School at the Christchurch College of Education. The school is a very well run and respected unit but will not be part of the upcoming merger with Canterbury University.

He guides the creation of a shared vision, takes the responsibility of being the main change agent and restructures the top management team, if necessary. The speech was followed by an interactive session during which he answered queries from the audience. The participants got real inspiration from a personality who proved that a man can realize his vision, no matter how challenging it is, by dreaming big and then diligently acting upon his dream.

He said "Excellent Leadership is the key to success of any organizations. Welfare of the people and nation should be at the top of the mission as well as protection and enhancement of the environment"
